July 2 - New York City

Arriving in NYC

We arrived in Hoboken, across the Hudson from Manhattan, two days ago and will stay until July 5th.  Our marina is nicely situated but the ferry wakes come in past the breakwater and make it a very rocky place.  It is somewhat akin to riding a bucking bronco.  We rented a car for two days and used it first to go to Wal-Mart to buy a digital TV for the boat.  We got there fine with the MapQuest directions but those directions don't read so well backwards and we got miserably lost.  We did find our way back to the rental place, though, and forked out the money for a GPS.  It got us to Staten Island for dinner with my cousin's wife, a tour of her historic house, and back to the marina.

Joann Nelson House

Yesterday we wanted to get off the rocking boat so decided to drive up Long Island.  The GPS got us there, but via the Lincoln Tunnel, 42nd avenue past Times Square and Grand Central Station, and through another tunnel.  We have never seen so many taxis, pedestrians (jaywalkers), and trucks all in one place but made it through with only two people honking at us.  We had a nice lunch at Oyster Bay and visited Sagamore Hill, Teddy Roosevelt's home.  Today we will take the ferry across to see Ground Zero.

NCL Cruise Ship

The river activity is fun to watch.  A huge new NCL cruise ship came in and docked yesterday, there are ferries galore with barges and occasional pleasure boats.  Macy's fireworks show will be right in front of us off 6 barges.  They are sending 40,000 rockets off at the rate of 1500/minute to a height of 1000'.  Becka won't be happy but I will.
